Maserati seems to be pertually operating at the brink which makes the replacements for the current Italdesign-Giugiaro Coupe and Spyder a pair of ultra important vehicles for the historic automaker. Winding Road has commissioned a rendering that shows what it thinks the coupe likely to be called the Mistral (a cold northerly wind from Southern France and successor to the 3500GT) will look like when it goes on sale in mid-2007.

The new coupe and spyder will be based on the Quattroporte sedan the former being a true 2 2 and the latter a coupe-cabriolet with folding hardtop and only two seats. The cars will be lighter thanks to carbon composite and aluminum body panels. They will also have more power thanks to an enlarged version of the current 4.2-liter V8 expected to produce more than 500 horsepower from 4.5-liters of displacement. The Cambiocorsa shifter is also out with a new sequential manual six-speed by ZF and a traditional six-speed standard. The design is pure Italian sex with a little bit of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and styling cues from Porsche thrown in (I think they swiped those taillights from my Oldsmobile Alero though). Surprisingly Maserati will be aiming the Mistral squarely at the 911 family. If it's a hit Maserati will be able to take a few steps back from the brink.
