Don't be too surprised that the French are surrendering an early peek at the latest plans they're hatching. Peugeot's replacement for the 307 is expected to debut at Frankfurt. Imaginatively labeled 308 it'll hit the market as a 2008 model first as three- and five-door hatchbacks followed by hardtop convertible and wagon bodystyles a year later. A soft-road version (front-wheel-drive only) and a 210-hp hot RC variant are anticipated as well.

The 308 is expected to grow a bit over an inch in length while height shrinks slightly from the current 307. Power comes courtesy of a range of engines co-developed with BMW including 1.6-liter gas engines ranging in output from 75 to 170 horsepower and a 170-hp 2.2-liter turbo-diesel. Isn't it great when the French and the Germans get along?
